A strong yearling market continued to roll along at the regional level, with a Maryland-bred Nyquist colt selling for $370,000 to top a record-setting edition of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale on Tuesday.
Fasig-Tipton reported 159 yearlings sold at the single-session sale at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium for gross receipts of $4,960,400. At last year's sale, 180 yearlings sold for $4,287,700.
The average price was a record $31,197, skyrocketing 31 percent from $23,821 in 2024. The prior record mark was $29,578, established in 2021, when the market came roaring back from the pandemic-hampered sales of the prior year.
The median also spiked 33 percent to $20,000 from last year's mark of $15,000, tying the record median established in 2021. The buyback rate was 19 percent, compared to 28 percent last year.
The sale-topping Nyquist colt was purchased by Scanlon Training and Sales. Pinhookers will likely be extremely active at the remaining fall sales after finding tough going at the recently concluded Keeneland September sale.
The colt, who was consigned by Becky Davis as agent, is the first foal out of the multiple stakes-placed Lookin At Lucky mare Lookin Dynamic. That mare is a half-sister to stakes winners Another Broad and Dynamic Strike.
