OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. laughed as he noted that it took six starts for Sculcos Folly to finally face New York-breds, something he did last Saturday when he won the Gander Stakes by 5 3/4 lengths at Aqueduct.
Prior to his victory in the Gander, Sculcos Folly won an open starter allowance by 9 3/4 lengths at Aqueduct after making two starts at Laurel and one at Monmouth Park.
“The other day was the first time that he’s run with just New York-breds,” Dutrow said. “That’s kind of wild because he’s been stabled here every single day, he’s trained by me, and I want to run here and [owner Michael] Dubb wants to run here.”
Sculcos Folly is not only a New York-bred, but he’s by New York-based stallion Redesdale, which makes him eligible for the Mind Your Biscuits division of the New York Stallion Series on April 11. That 6 1/2-furlong race carries a $200,000 purse.
“That’s a good target for him,” Dutrow said. “He’s been a pleasant surprise. The starter that he won, yeah, he ran big, a good number and all. I don’t know what he beat. Same thing the other day. He ran big, a good number, and all I hope he keeps doing that.”
