ARCADIA, Calif. – A runaway comeback win by California-based Anywho in a Churchill Downs allowance sets her up for a return to stakes races, including an early-summer clash with Tamara at Los Alamitos.

Anywho, trained by John Sadler and owned by Hronis Racing, shipped to Churchill for a second-level allowance sprint on May 17, her first start since September. “There wasn’t a (local) race, and she was really good and ready to go,” Sadler said. The circuitous path – from Santa Anita to Churchill Downs to prep for a stake at Los Alamitos – was economically feasible.

“You can do it now because of the size of the purse,” Sadler said. Anywho earned $76,920 for her eight-length wet-track victory that earned an 88 Beyer Figure. The win stamped the Bolt d’Oro filly a contender for the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes on July 6 at Los Alamitos. That sprint is also the reported target for another filly by Bolt d’Oro – Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante winner Tamara.

Anywho, a 4-year-old, finished first or second in all four sprints. Her only subpar races last year were around two turns. “We’ll keep her under one turn this year,” Sadler said. “Now we can get her back in something like the Great Lady M.”

Tamara, the 3-year-old produced by Beholder and seventh as the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies her most recent start, has recovered from a splint injury and is working regularly for trainer Richard Mandella. Tamara worked five furlongs in 1:01 on Saturday at Santa Anita.

The Los Alamitos meet runs June 22 through July 7.
