Barnes closed as the 8-1 individual favorite in the fourth Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool.

Barnes, the undefeated but lightly raced 3-year-old colt trained by Bob Baffert, closed as the tepid 8-1 individual favorite in last weekend’s Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool, the fourth to be held since last year.

Barnes, who was the second choice on the morning line, jumped over Citizen Bull, the 6-1 morning-line individual favorite for the pool, who closed at 9-1. The “all others” entry was the overall favorite in the 40-entry field, closing at 9-2.

Barnes, who has won a maiden race and the San Vincente Stakes on Jan. 4, was the individual favorite in the third pool (6-1) and the second pool (8-1).

Last year for the fourth pool, the “all others” entry also closed at 9-2 as the favorite, but that entry was followed closely behind by Sierra Leone, the eventual second-place finisher in the Derby, at 5-1.

Magnitude, the long-shot, front-running winner of Saturday’s Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds who posted a 108 Beyer Speed Figure with the victory, was not listed individually in the pool. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Magnitude earned 50 points toward eligibility for the Derby field, a number that will get him into the race.

Getaway Car, who won Sunday’s Sunland Derby in New Mexico shortly after the pool closed, ended up at 50-1 in the future pool. Getaway Car earned 20 Derby qualifying points with the win.

According to Churchill Downs, total handle on the four future wager pools this year is up 2.9 percent over last year’s total through the first four pools.
