OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Bourbon Day, a well-beaten third in the Queens County Stakes, drops back in class and distance when he runs in a $100,000 claiming race that serves as the feature on Sunday’s eight-race card.
Prior to his run in the Queens County, Bourbon Day won a second-level allowance going 1 1/8 miles here Nov. 21. The 7-year-old gelding is 3 for 4 at Aqueduct, though most of his races have come going farther than Sunday’s one-mile distance.
Bourbon Day does possess speed that most in this field do not. Jose Lezcano rides for trainer Linda Rice.
Wild Vine, trained by Jamie Ness, raced close to the pace when he won an optional-claiming race at Laurel two starts back going a one-turn mile. He is coming out of a third-place finish behind Call Me Fast in the Kris Kringle Stakes on Dec. 31 at Parx Racing. Point Dume, second in the Kris Kringle, came back to win his next two starts, including the General George at Laurel last weekend.
Bramito won a $100,000 claiming race going a mile in the mud here Jan. 11, taking advantage of a quick pace and a terrific ride from apprentice Yedsit Hazlewood. Sunday, he’ll get the services of Ricardo Santana Jr.
Crushed It had shown speed in one-turn races before his last start, when he finished third to Bramito. In that race, he attempted to come from off the pace after breaking a step slow.
