Brad Free's Santa Anita Horses to Watch for the week of May 29-31, 2026

HOLDTHATRAINBOW
Trainer: Carla Gaines
Last race: May 29, 5th
Finish: 2nd by neck
Beyer: 66
Perfect-trip debut winner first out, Cal-bred filly ran well in Cal-bred turf sprint. Between rivals off pace, evenly, race won by pacesetter. Holdthatrainbow runs well on turf, trains well on dirt.

CIPRIANI
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: May 29, 8th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 80
First start in more than a year, entry-level allowance filly chased pacesetter, rallied inside, missed. Good comeback by three-start Bernardini filly who will be fitter for her next start.

MISS HELLFIRE
Trainer
: Mike Puype
Last race: May 30, 4th
Finish: 1st by 13 3/4
Beyer: 85
Debut 4-year-old filly broke well from post 2 in Cal-bred maiden-claiming sprint, took token pressure, and ran away. Cal-bred by Sir Prancealot figures as a contender right back vs. winners.

HAZAKA
Trainer: Phil D’Amato
Last race: May 30, 7th
Finish: 4th by 4
Beyer: 65
Euro import in maiden turf mile rated early, keen and unrelaxed, rallied wide into stretch then just went evenly late. Hazaka has more speed than he showed, this was a good comeback prep.

JASMINE
Trainer: Peter Eurton
Last race: May 30, 9th
Finish: 3rd by 3 3/4
Beyer: 66
Stretch-out maiden filly set fast pace in turf mile, opened up in lane, worn down by deep closers. Jasmine held best of the speed, and has found her niche around two turns. Long gone next out?

SHADOW NATION
Trainer
: Mike Puype
Last race: May 31, 1st
Finish: 1st by 6 1/2
Beyer: NA
Well-bet 2-year-old maiden broke last in turf sprint, gradually picked up steam into and through turn, cut corner, powered away. Not much behind him, but Irish-bred colt did it the right way.

LYING ZERO
Trainer
: Doug O’Neill
Last race: May 31, 4th
Finish: 2nd by 9 1/2
Beyer: 26
Bet to odds-on despite an abbreviated work tab, this 2-year-old filly by Nyquist, produced by a stakes winner, needed a prep. Chased pacesetter, held second, should move up next time out.

MOONA LISA
Trainer
: Bob Baffert
Last race: May 31, 6th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 87
A $1.9 million juvenile in 2024, this Tiz the Law filly ran super first out. Sped to lead, fast pace, worn down by stablemate, finished nine lengths clear of third. Next time for Moona Lisa.
