Broodmare of the Year Puca, the dam of a pair of classic winners, will be cataloged for the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale, set for the night of Nov. 3 in Lexington.
John Stewart of Resolute Racing, which currently owns the mare, first reported the news as he appeared on a Horse Racing Nation podcast on Friday. Stewart said he planned to place a reserve of $5 million on the mare, who he privately purchased for $2.8 million at the 2023 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
Grade 2-placed stakes winner Puca, by Big Brown, is the dam of 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage; 2024 Belmont Stakes and Haskell winner Dornoch; Baeza, third in both the Derby and Belmont this year; and stakes-placed Gunning.
Puca, who is now 13, was not bred back this spring after delivering a Good Magic filly, a full sister to her two classic winners, in May. The mare also has a yearling colt by Good Magic, who Stewart teamed with MyRacehorse to offer shares in this year.
“She foaled late this year,” Stewart said on the podcast. “We were going to send her to Frankel. That’s what I would do if I had kept her. He’s the best stallion in the world. . . . She’s already proven on dirt what she can do. . . . But there’s a commercial part of this business as well.”
