Dazzle d’Oro, a first-out maiden winner at Churchill Downs, suffered a catastrophic injury at the conclusion of a workout Monday morning over the main track at Saratoga in preparation for a start in the Grade 2, $200,000 Saratoga Special.
According to trainer Tom Amoss, Dazzle d’Oro suffered a fractured sesamoid in his left foreleg and was euthanized after being taken to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital.
Amoss was hoping to work the horse on Sunday, but the main track was too wet. He said he waited until after the second renovation break at 8:45 a.m. on Monday because he felt the track would be at its best.
“The track was definitely at its best after two renovation breaks. We took all the proper precautions,” he said. “Everybody’s devastated.”
Dazzle d’Oro, a son of Bolt d’Oro owned by Late Night Stables, won his debut at Churchill on June 29 by three lengths. He was a $250,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland September 2024 sales.
