USHWA
Derick Giwner has served as editor of DRF Harness since its launch in 2012.

Derick Giwner, editor of Daily Racing Form’s DRF Harness, has been selected for induction into the Communicators wing of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame, the United States Harness Writers Association announced Tuesday.

Giwner, a two-time winner of the Hervey Award for writing and a Man of the Year recipient from the USHWA in 2020, was tabbed to lead DRF Harness at its launch in 2012. His weekly Harness Digest Newsletter “is a must read for many segments of the harness community,” the USHWA said in a press release announcing his selection.

Giwner, 52, also has been a recipient of the Phil Pines Award and the Clyde Hirt Media Award. He has been covering harness racing since he started his career in 1996 at Sports Eye.

“While deep down you hope that people appreciate your work and contribution to the sport, being elected to the Communicator’s wing of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame really solidifies that feeling,” Giwner said. “I’m thrilled to be honored alongside harness racing’s elite and certainly look forward to many more years covering the sport I love.”

Also selected for Hall of Fame induction were Dr. John Egloff, owner of Vieux Carre Farm, a top-level breeding and racing operation; Marvin Katz, an owner of some of the sport’s most prestigious winners; and David Reid, owner of Preferred Equine Marketing, a full-service bloodstock agency and the operator of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale.

In addition, Tara Ellen Taylor, the long-time executive director of the Harness Horse Youth Foundation, was selected for induction into the Communicators Hall of Fame.

The inductees will be honored at a dinner on Feb. 22 in Orlando, Fla., and will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the Hall of Fame in Goshen, N.Y., on July 5.
