DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, February 16, 2024

Barbara D. Livingston
First post for Gulfstream racing is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. ET on Friday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:10 GP 1st RUNAWAY BREEZE (#5, 12-1) fits this condition almost to a T with her last win coming in July and she has proven effective around two turns in the past. Back with conditioned claimers for first time in a long time today. -Mike Welsch | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:25 TAM 3rd FORT BLING (#9, 6-1) moves to the grass in his first start off the claim by Renaldo Richards, who wins at 23% with new faces; pedigree doesn't offer many clues as to this colt's ability to handle the grass, as the dam was a stakes-placed sprinter and his best sibling to start C. Zee, earned the bulk of his $486K bankroll on the dirt, but sire Fort Loudon has four wins from 13 horses trying turf for the first time. -Kenny Peck | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:39 GP 4th MARSHMALLOW QUEEN (#2, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Welsch). | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:55 TAM 4th SIR DANIEL (#1, 5-1) cuts back to a sprint and gets back on the main track and this does seem to be his best surface; he was off the board when sent long two back but he was against the race flow there, yet closed with some interest through the lane. -Kenny Peck | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:59 LRL 4th MOMMA'S LINO (#4, 10-1) ran pretty well two back when wired in a slow-paced heat. Bumped at the start that day, she stalked in between horses, dropped inside on the turn, then finished evenly. Broke sharp last time in a race run in a driving snowstorm, prompted Neolithica from the outside and then three wide, but couldn't muster up a late surge when behind the two chalks. She has the pedigree and body type to appreciate today's longer distance. Perhaps those traits will help her turn the tables from stalking range. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:51 AQU 4th WILD MAGIC (#4, 12-1) got away last and then caught a spot of traffic around the turn in her sprint debut over a wet track here two weeks ago; never made a late impact after the early issues, but she raced on through the stretch despite a less-than-ideal trip for a first-time starter; bred to stretch out and eligible to improve at a fair price. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:02 LRL 6th HOTPOT (#6, 10-1) ships in from Parx seeking third straight victory after nice-looking score in the mud. Settled outside behind a quick pace, made a four-wide bid on the turn, then stayed strong in the stretch. This looks like a tougher spot from a class and pace standpoint, but he appears to have found his niche at this seven-furlong distance. Could use some help up front. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:06 OP 4th SLAM DUNK SERMON (#9, 5-1) is back in the straight claiming ranks off a series starter races in which he put up some strong Beyer Figures. -Mary Rampellini | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:33 LRL 7th TAJI MIKE (#4, 8-1) is a half-brother to stakes-placed turf sprinter Giant Patriot (won debut sprinting on turf; 75 dirt Beyer top) out of an unraced half to Grade 3-placed dirt sprinter Brushed On, multiple stakes-winning dirt performer Brush Over (95 dirt Beyer), and stakes-placed dirt sprinter Singular Broad (62 dirt Beyer) from the family of Group 1-winning turf router Shaadi. Feb. 3 gate work matches barn's 4-year-old Never Coast (entered in today's fifth). -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:04 LRL 8th NINJA ABARRIO (#8, 6-1) likely gained some fitness when wired in first try following 64-day layoff. Saved ground in midpack, split horses after a half-mile, dropped back down to the rail on the turn, then finished evenly in between. This will be her first time around two turns, but her dam won at 1 1/4 miles in Japan, and she has foaled a couple of route winners. Barn went 7 for 21 (33%, $3.10 ROI) between 6/4/23 and 2/11. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:26 AQU 7th THE INSTITUTE (#4, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:40 TAM 9th YOU MUST CHILL (#7, 8-1) moves up in class off the Karyn Philipp claim but this gelding was sharp in victory when last seen, and he posted a Beyer that's good enough for him to contend at this advanced level if he's able to run to it; positional speed should mean he's once again in a very favorable spot down the backstretch. -Kenny Peck | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:57 AQU 8th SAFALOW'S MISSION (#9, 5-1) failed to clear his first-level allowance condition during the eight-race form cycle that ended last August, though he did finish either second or third in six of those starts while earning several competitive figures; finally gets class relief after getting wired over a wet track in his first start back from the layoff last. month. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:17 OP 8th BURNINHUNKOFLOVE (#9, 9-2) is a versatile sort as one who has been effective from both on and off the pace. He goes for Broberg, who would seem to have an affinity for horses with Elvis-themed names as he also raced Hunka Burning Love. Either that - or they both have talent. We'll go with the latter. -Mary Rampellini | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:44 GG 5th DUST MAKER (#3, 6-1) will have a jump in class level after a win and a second in $12,500 claimers in her last two starts. She should be able to handle the transition to a higher level in a race that may work for her closing style. -Steve Andersen | Bet this race with DRF Bets
