DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, May 3, 2025

Barbara D. Livingston
First post for Belmont at the Big A racing is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

2:31 BAQ 6th SASSETTI (#1, 10-1) is out of solid turf performer Scheme (debut winner for this trainer), and has two three-quarter siblings that are both turf winners, including Roagna, who scored an impressive debut victory going this distance at the end of 2023; things to like, and he appears to be well-spotted. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

3:51 BAQ 8th KUNSHAN BRIDGE (#5, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race

3:57 OP 6th PHENOMENAL DREAM (#8, 8-1) has been on an upward trajectory of late. – Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

4:05 WO 6th GARNET AND GOLD (#4, 12-1) is the lone winter-raced runner in this non-three contest and should be dangerous if she brings her A game. Going back five years, Adamo was 3 for 10 with short-term layoff types competing off a claim ($1.37 ROI). – Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

4:45 WO 7th LUCKY GUEST (#3, 6-1) checked in third in his only 2yo outing in June and is returning to action as a new gelding. He wintered in Ocala with perennial leading trainer Casse before working four times here on the Tapeta and could prevail in this wide open maiden special. – Ron Gierkink
5:51 BAQ 11th HOT ROD RUMBLE (#4, 6-1) got into good form early last year once he found the right level, and he was popular at the claim box throughout 2024; dueled and tired behind a blowout winner when brought back from the layoff in March, and he took a step forward last time, despite catching a sloppy track; third off the layoff with speed. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

5:54 GP 10th COSTA AMALFITANA (#6, 8-1) faces older foes for the first time and should be the value in this race. She broke last in her first and third starts yet still broke her maiden in one of those. She broke 9th two back when facing stakes foes and that had to hurt. She beat a solid field at Tampa in her most recent and did so at 6-1. She gets second time Lasix and that is often a tad better for the girls. Race flow is more than fair and this barn shows a flat bet profit with their allowance runners. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

5:45 WO 9th PIN BOY (#5, 10-1) earned a 69 Beyer when second in his best of his five races last year. The son of the popular Souper Speedy has worked extensively and could put it all together at a square price. – Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

6:15 GP 11th NEMO (#8, 10-1) is a DRF best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race

7:28 SA 7th DAY AT THE TRACK (#7, 8-1), third last out in a relatively fast Cal-bred maiden 50, returns from a three-month break as the top choice in this Cal-bred MSW. 'TRACK improved during the fall-winter season; his best race was his only dirt start. Tepid choice with a front-running/pace-pressing trip while benefitting from a five-pound apprentice allowance. – Brad Free | Get PPs for this race

7:47 OP 12th The Trail's End, a starter allowance over a mile and three-quarters, has been a closing day tradition for decades. A competitive group lines up for this year's renewal. NEPAL UP (#14, 15-1) seems like one who will appreciate the added ground he gets in this spot. – Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race
