DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, April 27, 2025

Jim Duley/Maryland Jockey Club
First post for Laurel racing is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:10 AQU 1st LORD CAPTAIN (#1, 6-1) posted the first five wins of his career around two turns on dirt, and he earned a career-best 94 Beyer when first off the claim for this trainer a couple of summers ago at Saratoga; his form has been inconsistent since then, but he is second off the layoff after being re-claimed by Rice last September and then laid up, and he can get this far. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

1:30 OP 1st In the opener, FLOATING (#3, 8-1) might get the right setup courtesy of the ample speed in this spot. – Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

1:34 WO 2nd ITS JUST MONEY (#4, 8-1) wound up fourth behind two next-out winners when last seen in a $15K conditioned claimer on the dirt at the Fair Grounds. He was competitive on the Tapeta here last year and seems capable of besting the favored ROAD TO VERSAILLES, who's coming off back-to-back seconds in shorter non-two sprints over Gulfstream's Tapeta. – Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

2:40 LRL 6th TASKER (#3, 20-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Patrick Moquin). | Get PPs for this race

3:44 LRL 8th ATTACHED (#9, 9-2) somehow went unclaimed in two $5,000 claiming races at Meadowlands last year, winning one and just missing in the other; regardless of the caliber of racing, the mare proved herself as a turf sprinter in her 4-year-old campaign and earned several speed figures that put her in the running here; in the past five years, Duarte is 9-for-25 bringing turf runners back from layoffs over 180 days (35%, $4.28 ROI). – Patrick Moquin | Get PPs for this race

3:50 AQU 6th DEAR MOON (#8, 7-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race

4:17 LRL 9th ALANI (#6, 4-1) is one of two runners in this field who isn't coming off a layoff and has won two of her last three starts in allowance competition; her races at Parx are much better than her races anywhere else in her career, but she's in proven form and might be able to take advantage of this field coming off the shelf; she will likely have to gun it out of the gate from an outside post, but she has proven that she can handle hot fractions and have a say in the end. – Patrick Moquin | Get PPs for this race

4:41 WO 8th POULIN IN O T (#9, 8-1) used an aggressive approach to beat $35K conditioned claimers in his penultimate race at Gulfstream and earned his second straight Beyer in the mid 80s there most recently when fifth in an N2X on the grass. He's been working right along since returning to Woodbine and could use his fitness edge to prevail under apprentice Moran, who seems poised to have a successful meet. – Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

4:44 OP 7th MISS MAKENNA (#6, 8-1) ran well on the cutback to one turn last out and could be sitting on a peak effort in the third race of her form cycle. – Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

4:54 AQU 8th ITALIAN SOIREE (#3, 12-1) handled both turf and dirt last year while holding her own in stakes competition; made the turf debut in a Grade 1, where she stayed gamely in a race that held together in front of her, and from which both Vixen and Nirtogen have emerged to win graded stakes races; the blinkers were removed for the Jessamine at Keeneland, and she endured a brutal wide trip that day in an effort that might be better than it looks; back to turf in a race where her tactical speed plays. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

5:40 GP 10th CLEAR VISION (#1, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race

6:08 SA 5th SAQEEL (#2, 6-1) was compromised by a tough trip last out; third as the favorite in a $25k claiming dirt route. That race and highly rated runner-up finishes last fall at Santa Anita and Del Mar, make him the tepid choice in this $32k claiming starter at the same mile distance as last out. SAQEEL was blocked with nowhere to go in the lane, he had to wait for room, then only went evenly late. With a clear sailing, he can wear them down with a pressing trip. – Brad Free | Get PPs for this race
