DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, July 20, 2025

Debra A. Roma
First post for Saratoga racing is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:50 MTH 1st SELVAGGIA (#4, 6-1) is out of a dam, Wild Ridge, who won her own turf debut, and this filly is from the barn of Mike Pino, who has won with five of 13 runners dropping from MSW to maiden claimers over the past two years; she was no threat in her career bow but she has lots of room to improve off that race after racing off the pace in a sprint that lacked early zip and greatly favored the speeds (note inverted "S" in DRF pp's). – Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

12:50 GP 1st LOGAN'S ON THE RUN (#6, 3-1) is by a 15% debut sire (all sire stats are for 2YO's only). His dam went 2-1-0-1 and earned 51K. This is her first foal. January bred has an age advantage and a string of solid works all in a race that holds no world beaters. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

1:19 MTH 2nd GET LIKE MIKE (#5, 3-1) does have a tendency to run 2nd, which he has done in each of his last three starts, but he did run well behind sharp winners in all of those races, with two of them returning to score in their next starts; will need to stay close in the opening stages as he makes his first start off the Kelly Breen claim, as there's not a great deal of speed in this lineup. – Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

1:54 GP 3rd DIXIE ON FIRE (#6, 4-1) is by a 11% debut sire (all sire stats are for 2YO's only). His dam was un-raced and this is her first foal. Works are plentiful all for a barn that is 27% with their debut maidens. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

2:52 SAR 4th CHARLIE'S EXPRESS (#8, 5-1) owns good speed but is capable of stalking, and that option should be available to him here as he breaks from the outside post; good effort off the layoff in May when battling with the favorite all through the stretch before settling for second; went too fast on the lead last time when in as an MTO at a higher class level; drops back down. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

4:13 MTH 8th BAR DOWN EXPRESS (#10, 20-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck). | Get PPs for this race

4:35 SAR 7th TISQUANTUM (#2, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race

5:10 SAR 8th MELLE MEL (#9, 5-1) got bet as an MTO in her debut here last summer, but failed to break sharply and then chased wide while looking green; didn't get to run over fast dirt until February, and she crushed that field, before moving up in class again to no avail; ran better than it looks in that last one when getting away last and then winding up wide, before staying gamely for third. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

5:20 WO 9th REVELER'S ROW (#7, 12-1) won her debut sprinting in a professional manner in May before a gutsy, front-running second vs. older allowance opposition traveling the nine-furlong distance of the Oaks. She worked brilliantly last Sunday and could have the most upside in the field. – Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

5:50 GP 10th PROTEST (#6, 8-1) never got a breather last out yet still tried hard when third at 10-1. Second time on this surface has to help. This guy draws outside main pace foes and should be another good price. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

6:19 SAR 10th PHOEBEINWONDERLAND (#6, 6-1) only earned a 57 Beyer for the debut win over a muddy main track, though she deserves extra credit for that effort while gamely driving down a pair of colts who are now both stakes winners; stepped into a stakes race with fillies last time, where she endured a tough, wide trip and was never a factor; has plenty of turf in her pedigree and might be quite a bit better than she looks on paper. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

7:33 DMR 6th WESTWOOD (#5, 4-1), Grade 1-placed, faces maidens for the first time since finishing second in March. Subsequently third in the Santa Anita Derby, WESTWOOD had been off two months when he returned last month and finished last of four in the Affirmed Stakes. Arguably the "class"" of this field, he can wear them down from off the pace. – Brad Free | Get PPs for this race

9:03 DMR 9th QUEEN MAXIMA (#2, 7-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Brad Free). | Get PPs for this race
