DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, June 1, 2025

Debra A. Roma
First post for Gulfstream racing is scheduled for 12:50 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:10 LRL 1st J R JONE Z (#8, 5-1) finished in the money in four straight races to end his 2024 campaign, and McClellan is putting him in a softer spot for his second start back; toss the last race, where he returned from a winter layoff and lost all chance at the break; McClellan is stretching him out to a route after five straight sprints, but he broke his maiden near this distance and should handle it; in the past five years, trainer is 28-for-121 with sprint-to-route runners (23%, $2.34 ROI). – Patrick Moquin | Get PPs for this race

12:50 MTH 1st MIDNIGHT AWARD (#1, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck). | Get PPs for this race

12:50 GP 1st TEPEYAC (#2, 8-1) will sit the trip like a lot of these but there is some pace in this race. This colt draws fine and is feeling great. A return to the turf could prove the tipping point. We like how this colt switched from the turf to synth and held his form. A better price than some we would think. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

3:01 GP 5th SCREEN (#6, 8-1) is by a 13% debut turf sire. Her dam never tried the green. Of 3 sibs to race in the U.S., 2 beat winners and earned 167K and 103K (won turf debut). The other went 1-0-0-1 on the green yet earned 30K. This filly is bred to like two turns on the turf and that is that. Team Fawkes is 24% with new runners and works are perfect. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

3:38 WO 6th JUST A GEM (#4, 10-1) saved ground early before racing off a live rail on the turn en route to a decent fourth-place finish in her seven-furlong return to action. The 4yo ran big in both of her Tapeta routes last fall, including a belated third in allowance company behind the talented next-out winner Bolt Enoree. – Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

3:48 MTH 7th MIA'S CRUSADE (#7, 4-1) wasn't able to get close to SUMMER'S COMIN (#1, 4-1) in the Spruce Fir but she may have been at a tactical disadvantage in that sprint, which was not packed with pace and ultimately resulted in a two-speed exacta; the former is probably better sprinting but she has run well enough in previous mile tries over this strip while the latter is certainly one to fear on the basis of that last race, though she won't be anywhere close to 16-1 again. – Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

4:05 GP 7th UNO TIGER (#8, 9-2) is a DRF Best bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race

5:09 GP 9th IL MARCHESSE (#4, 12-1) can stalk a great trip if the two speeds gun. Class drop is the main selling point. Team D'Angelo is 16% with new runners. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

8:38 SA 10th ELEGANT SWAY (#4, 5-1) can score a mild upset in this Cal-bred allowance turf sprint based on a better-than-looked fourth last out on the main oval. She was shuffled back slightly and dropped well off the pace, had to wait for room, angled outside and actually finished okay. Her two previous on this hillside course were not bad; she can spring a minor surprise in her third start off the claim. – Brad Free | Get PPs for this race
