Roses in May, whose biggest win came in the 2005 Dubai World Cup, has died, Big Red Farm of Japan said on its social media channels. The son of Devil His Due was 25.
Roses in May won four graded stakes for Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trainer Dale Romans. His three-length score in the World Cup had been preceded, the summer before, by an additional Grade 1 triumph in the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga.
He was also second in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic to Hall of Famer Ghostzapper in a stacked field, finishing ahead of top-level foes, including defending Classic winner Pleasantly Perfect and champions Azeri and Funny Cide.
Roses in May, who retired with a record of 13-8-4-0 and earnings of more than $5.4 million, spent his entire stud career in Japan. His 10 stakes winners are led by multiple graded stakes winner Dream Valentino, who earned more than $5.3 million while racing from ages 2 to 10.
