Gate to Wire escaped injury when he flipped in the paddock while being saddled before the Lafayette Stakes on Monday at Keeneland.
Keeneland stewards, on the advice of track veterinarians, quickly scratched Gate to Wire from the seven-furlong contest for 3-year-olds, though trainer Todd Pletcher said the colt seemed fine after the incident and walked back to Pletcher’s barn. There’s no reason Gate to Wire should miss training time, and Pletcher said the $600,000 Pat Day Mile on May 3 at Churchill Downs was a logical next start for Gate to Wire, who won the seven-furlong Swale Stakes on Feb. 1 at Gulfstream Park before finishing a one-paced fifth in the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth Stakes.
