Hippodrome 3R: Quebec's best duel on Super Sunday

Hippodrome 3R hosted their annual Super Sunday card, with eight series finals for Quebec-bred 2- and 3-year-olds, and favorites proved hard to beat as they won seven of the events.

Two-year-old Sportswriter gelding Bernard was the star of the day as he improved to six-for-six this year with a 1:56 4/5 victory for driver William Roy and trainer Guy Roy. Bred by Louis-Frederic Giroux, Bernard is owned by Sabrina Pelletier and Yvon Genereux.

The lone upsetter was 3-year-old pacing filly Mirabel Enfete, as the Leader Bayama homebred for Guy Corbeil turned a pocket trip into a 1:55 1/5 victory at odds of 11-1. Dan Dube drove the winner for trainer Maxime Velaye. Dube and Velaye also won the sophomore filly trot with Soleo, a daughter of Muscle Mass, in 1:58 3/5 for owner/breeder Ecurie Provoquante.

Trainer/driver Guy Gagnon had a hat trick as he took the 2-year-old filly pace with Cattlekiss, a daughter of Cattlewash bred by Yves Sarrazin, by 13 lengths in 1:57, the rookie filly trot with Abby Rose Men, a daughter of Muscle Mass, in 2:01 4/5 and the 2-year-old male trot with Magic Liam, a Muscle Mass gelding, in 2:03 4/5. Gagnon also owns his trio of winners - Cattlekiss by himself, Abby Rose Men in partnership with breeder Chantal Gravel and 9129 9560 Quebec Inc. and Magic Liam with Stephanie and Frederic Gagnon. Magic Liam, who is undefeated in five appearances, was bred by Denis Marcotte.

Louis Roy also drove a champion in his return to his native province as The Magic Moment, a Control the Moment gelding, took the sophomore male pace in 1:55 for trainer Francis Guillemette. The Magic Moment was bred by Gestion A&A Belanger Inc. and is co-owned by them with Cynthia Cote-Dupont.

Sunday's other victor was Mass Speed, a 3-year-old gelding by Muscle Mass, in 1:59 for driver Dennis St-Pierre and breeder/owner/trainer Michel Allard.
