Jockey Jose Alvarez could be sidelined for the next six to eight weeks after he sustained a fracture to his leg in Friday night’s eighth race at Sam Houston Race Park.
Alvarez was involved in a chain-reaction incident that also included jockey Stewart Elliott, who was off his mounts Saturday and Sunday due to soreness and a black eye, according to his agent, Scott Hare.
Alvarez was unseated when his mount “ducked out suddenly,” in Friday’s race, according to the chart of the turf route for fillies and mares. The horse, Made an Offer, then knocked Elliott’s mount, County Slugger, “off-stride,” unseating Elliott, according to the chart.
Alvarez also sustained an injury to his wrist.
“He fractured his leg and his wrist, but neither one of them is displaced,” agent Monty Penney said Sunday. “So, he’s going to see an orthopedic doctor tomorrow and hopefully they just put a cast on there and it’s six to eight weeks.
"He was having a good meet.”
Alvarez ranks third in the standings to leader Elliott.
Penney looks for Alvarez to resume riding in the middle of the Lone Star Park meet, which runs from April to July.
“He keeps himself pretty fit, so hopefully, he heals up a little quicker than most,” Penney said.
Both Elliott and Alvarez missed key mounts on the Texas Champions Day card Saturday at Sam Houston.
Elliott will likely return to riding on Friday, Hare said on Sunday.
