Joseph-trained Bucchero pair try for first turf wins Friday

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has the pair of The Dove Rules and Breezero in Friday's eighth race at Gulfstream.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. sends out a pair of 3-year-old fillies by Bucchero on turf Friday, and both are looking for their first win on the surface in the featured first-level allowance at Gulfstream.

The eighth race is a five-furlong sprint restricted to fillies and mares bred in Florida.

Bucchero was a multiple graded stakes winner sprinting on turf.

Joseph on Friday saddles The Dove Rules and Breezero in the field of eight.

Breezero is making her first start on grass after winning over open, older foes on Tapeta in her most recent start July 21.

“She seems to handle the Tapeta quite well, so hopefully she’ll handle the grass as effectively,” Joseph said.

Emisael Jaramillo has the mount from post 5 for Miller Racing.

The Dove Rules will break from post 3 for Lawson Racing. She’s making her fourth start on turf, and last out was third on the surface when facing older rivals Aug. 2.

“She’s run well on the turf in her starts,” said Joseph, who has Edgard Zayas to ride.

“She comes from a little off the pace,” Joseph said. “She has enough speed, but normally she sits off a couple of horses.”

There is one additional daughter of Bucchero in the race, the 4-year-old Clay Solider. She, too, is looking for her first turf win Friday.

St. Pat’s Day is moving back to turf for the feature, and her career-high 91 Beyer Speed Figure came on turf earlier this year. A repeat of that performance might make her tough to contain. She will start from post 8 off a fifth-place finish in a $12,500 starter allowance on Tapeta.

Friday’s card also includes a $25,000 starter allowance in which Joseph saddles leading contenders Shankar and Three Wolves. The third race will be run over a mile and 70 yards on Tapeta.

The second race is a maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies, and the field includes a daughter of American Pharoah named In Other Words and a daughter of Bucchero named Happy Sunday.
