Journalism leads workouts

Journalism was second behind Fierceness in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at 1 1/4 miles at Del Mar on Aug. 30 in his last start.

Journalism, one of the nation’s leading 3-year-olds, worked a half-mile on dirt in 47 seconds on Friday at Santa Anita in advance of the Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Del Mar.

Trained by Michael McCarthy, Journalism was second behind Fierceness in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at 1 1/4 miles at Del Mar on Aug. 30 in his last start. Friday’s workout was the second for Journalism since that race. Last Saturday, Journalism worked a half-mile in 48.20 seconds.

Earlier this year, Journalism won three Grade 1 races – the Santa Anita Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Haskell Invitational – and was second in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.

Meanwhile, the Richard Mandella-trained 2-year-old Bourbon and Ginger zoomed five furlongs on the infield training track in 57.40 seconds.

“I didn’t mean to work her so fast, but she liked it,” Mandella said.

Bourbon and Ginger was a well-beaten fifth in the Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 6 in her second start. She will race on turf in either the $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes against males at five furlongs on Oct. 4 or the Grade 3 Surfer Girl Stakes for fillies at a mile on Oct. 5.
