Jockey Junior Alvarado, sidelined since being injured March 23 at Gulfstream Park, will resume race-riding Wednesday, April 16, at Keeneland, his agent, Mike Sillito, said Wednesday afternoon.
Alvarado fractured his shoulder blade when the horse he was riding had a heart attack and fell. Alvarado, who has been working horses, Sillito said, has two mounts at Keeneland.
Of greater import than the midweek card at Keeneland is the fact Alvarado is the regular rider of leading Kentucky Derby hope Sovereignty. Manny Franco substituted for the injured Alvarado when Sovereignty finished second March 29 in the Florida Derby. Alvarado rode the Godolphin colt his first four starts, most recently in the Fountain of Youth Stakes on March 1 at Gulfstream. Bill Mott, Alvarado’s most steadfast supporter, trains Sovereignty.
