Commandment and So Happy have replaced Renegade as the early co-favorites for the Kentucky Derby, according to parimutuel pool data reviewed at 2 p.m. Eastern.
Renegade, winner of the Arkansas Derby in his last start, was the morning-line favorite for the Derby from Churchill oddsmakers and the second choice on the line made by Daily Racing Form’s David Aragona. While he was 5-1 throughout the early hours of the pool on Friday and Saturday morning, he drifted to 6-1 early Saturday afternoon, with Commandment and So Happy dropping to 5-1.
Commandment won the Florida Derby in his last start; The Puma was second in that race by a nose. However, The Puma was scratched Saturday morning with a leg infection.
So Happy won the Santa Anita Derby in his last start and was 15-1 on both the Churchill and DRF morning lines.
Two other horses also were 6-1 at 2 p.m.: Further Ado, winner of the Blue Grass Stakes, and Chief Wallabee, third in the Florida Derby in his last start.
The tight grouping of the top five horses indicates that the post-time favorite will be hard to determine. Approximately $17.0 million was in the win pool at 2 p.m. Last year, $122.5 million was bet in the win, place, and show pools on the Derby.
The Derby has a post time of 7:02 p.m. Eastern.
