Burnham Square
Gelding by Liam’s Map – Linda, by Scat Daddy
Bred in Kentucky by Whitham Thoroughbreds
Burnham Square, winner of the Grade 3 Holy Bull, looks to take the next step on Gulfstream’s path to the Kentucky Derby in Saturday’s Grade 2 Fountain of Youth. The Liam’s Map gelding is a third-generation homebred for Whitham Thoroughbreds.
Liam’s Map was never worse than second in eight career starts. After finishing second by a neck to eventual divisional champion Honor Code in the Grade 1 Whitney, he won the Grade 1 Woodward and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He is the sire of 15 graded stakes winners in his career to date.
Liam’s Map is from the classic Unbridled sireline, and some of Liam’s Map’s best progeny have succeeded around two turns on both dirt and turf. However, Liam’s Map has also passed along his own speed.
His four Grade 1 winners are Colonel Liam, a three-time top-level winner around two turns on turf; Juju’s Map, who won the two-turn Alcibiades; Basin, who won the Hopeful at seven furlongs but stretched out to be second in the Arkansas Derby the following year; and Wicked Whisper, who won the Frizette going a one-turn mile at Belmont and then was a Grade 3-winning sprinter at 3.
Linda, a Whitham homebred, did her best work on turf, winning the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere at 1 1/16 miles. She is the dam of four winners from as many starters, but Burnham Square is her first stakes horse. Her other foals are Hatch, who has won from six furlongs to a mile on synthetic and dirt; English Charm, who has won from a mile to a mile and 70 yards on synthetic; and Lindsey, a winner from 5 1/2 furlongs to a mile and 70 yards on dirt.
Linda is out of the Whitham homebred Beautiful Noise, who won the Grade 2 Santa Ana at 1 1/8 miles on turf and was beaten less than a length when third in the Grade 1 Gamely Breeders’ Cup Stakes at the same distance. Beautiful Noise is a half-sister to Listening, whose five graded stakes wins included the Grade 1 Hollywood Oaks at 1 1/8 miles on dirt and the Grade 1 Milady Breeders’ Cup Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on dirt.
This is the extended family of champion sprinter Lost in the Fog, Grade 1-winning sprinter Bonapaw, and Grade 1-winning turf router La Coronel.
