Louisiana-bred leads Lone Star yearling sale

A Louisiana-bred colt by Aurelius Maximus brought $95,000 on Tuesday to top the Texas summer yearling sale at Lone Star Park.

Terry Stephens purchased the unnamed April foal from the consignment of Scott Mallory, agent. The colt is from the stakes-placed mare Too Much to Bear.

Other top sellers were an Arkansas-bred filly by Yaupon who brought $87,000 from OCL and a Louisiana-bred filly by Drain the Clock who brought $82,000 from Patricia’s Hope.

In all, the Texas Thoroughbred Association reported 181 yearlings sold for a total of $2.8 million. There were 53 that did not sell. The average sale price was $15,981.

At the corresponding sale a year ago, total sales were $2.6 million and the average was $18,910. The catalog Tuesday was the largest since the TTA began operating the longtime sale in 2016.

“We expected the average and median to slip with a bigger catalog this year, so overall we are pleased with the results,” sales director Foster Bridewell said in a press release. “We also had two six-figure horses last year to help boost the numbers as well. We had a big crowd on hand today and the middle and higher-end markets were strong, and our total sales were up.”

During a small mixed session following the yearlings, the 7-year-old gelding Bobby Brinkley topped the session by bringing $10,000.
