Ms. Tart powers home to victory in Satin and Lace Stakes

Ms. Tart, with Israel Rodriguez riding, wins the $100,000 Satin and Lace Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths.

Ms. Tart drove to a 1 1/4-length victory in the $100,000 Satin and Lace Stakes for filly and mare sprinters Monday night at Presque Isle Downs – a win that should set her up for the biggest race of the year at the Erie, Pa., track.

The Satin and Lace is the local prep for the Grade 2, $300,000 Presque Isle Masters on Sept. 19. In a post-race interview on the track’s in-house feed, trainer Kevin Rice confirmed his filly would go on to that race.

When the full field of 12 broke from the starting gate Monday evening, Girl of My Dreams emerged from the outside half of the group to clear the inside runners. She clicked off the first quarter in a fast 22.27 seconds on the Tapeta but appeared to be moving comfortably under a long hold. Princess Runaway maneuvered to the outside to track her intently. After that opening-quarter scramble, Israel Rodriguez had Ms. Tart, who had broken from the rail, in fifth, but less than a length back of the leader in a tight pack.

Girl of My Dreams opened a length lead on her pursuers around the far turn but was already coming under a ride. She continued to fight on, with Princess Runaway stuck to her outside, the latter appearing as though she might inherit the lead and go on with it. However, Princess Runaway quickly faded when confronted by Mitole Magic –  who had saved ground throughout – on her inside and Ms. Tart on her outside, the eventual winner tipping out for clear sailing. Ms. Tart got the measure of Mitole Magic and a determined Girl of My Dreams near the furlong grounds and powered her way to her final margin.

The final time for the six furlongs was 1:09.08. Ms. Tart returned $9 for the win.

Favored Gal in a Rush, who had been 10th rounding the far turn, came wide with her customary late charge but had to settle for third as Mitole Magic held her off by a half-length.

After Gal in a Rush, it was 1 1/4 lengths to Right Now, who edged Girl of My Dreams by a head for fourth. Curlin’s Girl, Heart, B G Warrior, Miss Betty, Princess Runaway, Song of Norway, and Frolic in the Park completed the order of finish.

Ms. Tart was claimed for $35,000 by Rice out of a win in January at Gulfstream and has since won 4 of 8 starts for the trainer and owner Nathan McCauley, including a pair of stakes. She adds her win at Presque Isle to an upset score in the Grade 3 Royal North sprinting on the Woodbine turf in May.
