Rosemary Pasquarello was named clerk of scales by the New York Racing Association. She is believed to be the first woman to hold that position on this circuit.

Pasquarello replaces Jack Welsh, who resigned that position in March. Pasquarello has been working in the jockeys’ room, alongside assistant clerk of scales Brian Pochman, since March.

The clerk of scales is responsible for making sure the jockeys carry the correct weight, get to the paddock on time, and are wearing the correct silks.

“I’m always moving, it’s never boring, and this is a great group of guys and girls,” Pasquarello, 43, said.

Pasquarello has worked in various capacities at the track. She first worked as a groom for trainer Juan Ortiz and was a hotwalker/groom for Gary Sciacca for 14 years. Pasquarello also worked for eight years in the Horse Identification department before moving to the racing office in February 2024.

◗ Sandman, the Arkansas Derby winner, completed his major preparations for the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes on July 26 by working a half-mile in 49.01 seconds Wednesday morning at Saratoga. It was his third work, all in blinkers, since his third-place finish in the Preakness on May 17.
