Prat, Ortiz top jockey ranks; Brown, Asmussen lead trainers for 2024

Jockey Flavien Prat set the record for most graded stakes wins in a year, while also earning a career-best $37,274,176.

Flavien Prat, who this year set the record for most graded stakes victories by a jockey in a single year, finished 2024 with $37,274,176 in earnings, easily topping the 2024 rider’s list by purses.

Prat’s total was a personal best from his 10 years of riding in the United States, besting his 2022 mark of $29.8 million by $7.4 million. Prat earned the sum from 1,040 mounts, winning on 230 of them, for a win rate of 22 percent.

Irad Ortiz Jr. finished second on the earnings list with $32.9 million in purses, while Tyler Gaffalione was third with $29.0 million.

Ortiz ran away with the wins title, finishing with 327 from 1,549 mounts. Jose Ortiz finished second by wins, with 276, narrowly edging the Mid-Atlantic rider Mychel Sanchez, who notched 273 wins this year.

Among trainers, Chad Brown notched his sixth trainer’s title by earnings, finishing 2024 with $30,866,710 in total purses. Steve Asmussen finished second by earnings, with $29.4 million, while Brad Cox finished third, with $28.3 million.

By wins, Asmussen topped the chart with 407, to notch his 14th title in that category and extend his record for all-time wins in Thoroughbred racing. Jamie Ness was second with 364 winners, and Saffie Joseph Jr. was third with 264.

Godolphin Stables blew all owners out of the water with its 2024 purse haul of $20,234,455, almost $12 million more than the $8.4 million earned by Klaravich Stables in second. Juddmonte was third with $7.1 million in earnings.

By wins, Bruno Schickedanz topped the owner’s chart with 160 victories from 1,143 starts. End Zone Athletic was second with 114 wins from 552 starts, and Godolphin was third, with 104 wins from 460 starts.
