The Gun Runner colt, now named Brant, sold for a record $3 million at an OBS sale in March.

The $3 million Gun Runner colt who set an OBS sale record in March when purchased by Donato Lanni on behalf of Zedan Racing has been named Brant and is in steady training with Bob Baffert at Santa Anita.

The colt was consigned by Eddie Woods, helping him go out on a high note. Woods retired as a consignor after more than three decades in the business. The colt eclipsed the previous OBS record of $2.45 million paid by agent John Moynihan on behalf of Coolmore interests for a Tiznow colt at the April 2017 2-year-olds-in-training sale.

Horse of the Year and standout young sire Gun Runner is expected to have a strong year with his 2-year-olds, as this is the crop conceived after his record-setting freshman season of 2021. The colt is the first foal out of the winning Liam’s Map mare Tynan, a half-sister to graded stakes winners Pappacap and Boppy O. Pappacap is by Gun Runner.

Zedan said on social media that he named the colt for fellow owner and “dear friend” Peter Brant. The colt was swiftly on the work tab following the March sale, breezing four times at Los Alamitos starting on April 4. He then moved to Santa Anita, where he has had six breezes since May. The most recent of those came when he worked four furlongs in 49 seconds flat on June 15.
