HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Dale Romans may not leave South Florida with a Kentucky Derby horse, but in Sorcerer’s Silver it does appear he has a nice 3-year-old for shorter races in the division.
On Thursday, Sorcerer’s Silver won a first-level allowance race, restricted to Florida-breds, by seven lengths. He ran six furlongs in 1:09.29 and earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure. That followed a debut win against Florida-breds by 8 1/4 lengths, a race in which he earned an 84 Beyer.
Romans said he is looking to run Sorcerer’s Silver in the Grade 2, $600,000 Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard.
“I think he’s a quality horse,” Romans said. “He hasn’t run against much yet. Next start will test him. We’ll throw him to the wolves a little bit.”
Romans said he wasn’t looking to run Sorcerer’s Silver at six furlongs but said the allowance race for Florida-breds going longer didn’t fill.
Sorcerer’s Silver, a son of Good Magic, was purchased out of the Timonium 2-year-old-in-training sale last May for $130,000. He is owned by West Point Thoroughbreds and Domeyko Taylor.
Romans said the horse needed a chip removed from an ankle following the sale, which is why he didn’t race as a 2-year-old.
