Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park will each rename a graded stakes to honor the late trainers D. Wayne Lukas and Christophe Clement, the track’s parent company, 1/ST Racing and Gaming, announced on Wednesday.
Starting in 2026, Santa Anita will rename its Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes as the D. Wayne Lukas Stakes, while Gulfstream will change the name of its Grade 3 La Prevoyante Stakes to the Christophe Clement Stakes.
Lukas, a Hall of Famer, died in late June at the age of 89. Clement died in late May at the age of 59.
In a release, 1/ST said it selected the two stakes because of their connections to the respective trainers. Lukas won the Santa Monica Stakes six times, including in 1980, when the victory represented his first Grade 2 win at Santa Anita and his ninth graded stakes overall. Clement won the La Prevoyante in 1992, his second graded stakes win of his career, and went on to win the La Prevoyante five more times.
