Street Warrior ends layoff with 10,000 Lakes triumph

Street Warrior wins the Haunted Haze at Canterbury Park on Saturday night.

Street Warrior returned from a layoff as sharp as ever on Saturday night when he powered to a 3 3/4-length win over Haunted Haze in the 10,000 Lakes at Canterbury Park.

The race was one of two $50,000 stakes for Minnesota-breds on the card. Thunders Rocknroll won her second $50,000 Lady Slipper.

Street Warrior ($2.80), who last raced in October, set the pace in the 10,000 Lakes, leading his rivals through fractions of 21.89 seconds for the opening quarter and 43.89 for the half-mile before covering six furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.15.

Constantino Roman was aboard for trainer Joel Berndt.

Suzanne Stables bred and owns Street Warrior, a son of Barbados who has now won 7 of 12 starts and earned $200,800.

Lady Slipper

Thunders Rocknroll ($2.10) returned to racing with fillies and mares in the Lady Slipper and was a three-length winner over Carson Bay.

Thunders Rocknroll came into the Lady Slipper off a fourth-place finish against males in the $100,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes on April 25 at Fonner Park.

In Saturday's race, she set fractions of 22.42 for the opening quarter and 45.33 for the half-mile before winning the six-furlong stakes in 1:11.12.

Manuel Americano was aboard for trainer Patrick Swan.

Bob Lindgren bred and owns Thunders Rocknroll, a daughter of Maclean's Music who has now won six stakes races. Overall, she is 12 for 33 for earnings of $458,137.

*** Sushi Man ($2.60), who won last year’s Canterbury Derby and Minnesota Derby, launched his season with a 4 1/4-length allowance win over the local turf course Saturday night. He covered the mile on firm ground in 1:36.29.
