ARCADIA, Calif. – Twenty days after a maiden romp at Santa Anita, 2-year-old filly Super Corredora will jump into the deep end.
“She’s going in the big one,” trainer John Sadler said Saturday morning, referring to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Oct. 31 at Del Mar. It’s a big jump from maiden to Grade 1, but Super Corredora ran like a stakes filly when she stretched to a mile and crushed.
“She won with a big number, she won easily, and (the Breeders’ Cup) is right in our home court,” Sadler said. “She’s a Gun Runner, they run better when you stretch them out.”
Super Corredora won the maiden mile by 8 1/4 lengths, earning a 78 Beyer Speed Figure. The figure is only five points less than the 83 Beyer that Explora earned winning the Grade 2 Oak Leaf Stakes. Explora is the early favorite for the BC Juvenile Fillies.
The maiden win by Super Corredora was not unexpected. She had two even-paced sprints under her belt, and Sadler was keen to stretch her out. He knew she wanted to run long “before she ever ran,” Sadler said. “Sometimes the horse gets ready ahead of the calendar.”
Super Corredora sprinted twice at Del Mar, finishing fifth and second, before she stretched to a mile on Oct. 11 at Santa Anita. Super Corredora pressed the pace and ran away under jockey Hector Berrios.
The BC Juvenile Fillies will be Super Corredora’s first stakes. Although she would not be guaranteed a Juvenile Fillies berth if the race overfilled, that is not the case this year. As of Saturday, only 12 fillies were under consideration for the Juvenile Fillies. If she pulls off the upset, Super Corredora would be the first to win the Juvenile Fillies off a maiden win.
“We’ll pre-enter Monday and if everything looks good, we’ll give it a go,” Sadler said. “She’ll breeze a little bit six or seven days out.”
Super Corredora was a $400,000 yearling purchase at Keeneland; she is owned by a partnership that includes Spartan Equine Racing; West Point Thoroughbreds; and Robert Gardiner and Michael Olszewski. .
