Trainer Kelly Von Hemel saddled winners in three of the eight Iowa Classic stakes on the closing-night card Saturday at Prairie Meadows.
He struck in the first of the races, the $100,000 Donna Reed, with Miss Peach, as well as in the $100,000 Iowa Breeders’ Derby with Jack’s Time and the $100,000 Terry E. Branstad with Tee Off Time.
The stakes were worth approximately $800,000, and each was restricted to runners bred in Iowa.
Jack’s Time ($3.60) kept Amorosa from winning his fifth straight race when he rallied for a three-length win in the Iowa Breeders’ Derby. Glenn Corbett was aboard Jack’s Time, who rallied into fractions of 22.34 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.07 for the half-mile and 1:11.34 for six furlongs before going on to cover the 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:43.12.
Jack’s Time was winning his third consecutive race Saturday night. The son of Not This Time races for the partnership of Brian Hall, Jason Loutsch, Justin Loutsch, Jason Cline and Nick Jensen.
Tee Off Time ($7.20) closed for a three-quarter-length win over Specialsortastorm in the Brandstad. The winner covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.55. Kevin Roman was aboard the son of Not This Time for Albaugh Family Stables.
Miss Peach ($3.40) shuttled home by 5 1/4 lengths in the Donna Reed, which was for fillies and mares at one mile, 70 yards. She covered the distance in 1:43.08. Tyler Bacon was aboard the daughter of Dominus for Poindexter Thoroughbreds.
Miss Peach has now won at least one stakes at Prairie Meadows for each of the past four years.
Kanojo takes Oaks
Kanojo won her fifth straight race when she rolled home by eight lengths over Jackie Sparrow in the $100,000 Iowa Breeders’ Oaks. Kanojo has now won the races in her streak by a combined margin of 31 1/4 lengths.
Kanojo ($2.10) covered the one mile, 70 yards in 1:42.62. Alberto Pusac was aboard for trainer Kevin Eikleberry.
Kanojo is a daughter of Dialed In who races for Eikleberry, Reunion Racing Stables and Arapahoe Thoroughbreds. She has now won four stakes and overall is 7 for 9 for earnings of $326,078.
Eikleberry won a second stakes on the card when he saddled Omero for a head victory in the $100,000 Cradle for 2-year-olds. Alfredo Triana Jr. was aboard the winner, who paid $80.20.
Omero is a son of Sky Mesa who races for Poindexter Thoroughbreds. The winner covered six furlongs in 1:11.23. He came into the race off a victory in a $50,000 maiden claiming race at Prairie Meadows.
*** Triana won a second 2-year-olds stakes on the card when Somavia ($10.40) darted home three lengths in front in the $100,000 Iowa Sorority for fillies. She covered six furlongs in 1:12.15. Tristan Ashford trains the daughter of Basin for Ron Stolich.
*** Won Happy Mama ($4) was a two-length winner over Demidanu in the $75,000 Iowa Classic Distaff Sprint. She covered six furlongs in 1:11.43. Kevin Roman was aboard the daughter of Runhappy for trainer Travis Murphy, who co-owns Won Happy Mama with Matt Trent and Poindexter Thoroughbreds.
*** Wildatlanticstorm ($18) fought for a neck win over Glengarry in the $100,000 Dan Johnson Sprint. The winner covered six furlongs in 1:09.49. There were no fractional times available. Elvin Gonzalez rode Wildatlanticstorm for James Jorgensen and trainer Ray Ashford Jr. The winner is by Stormy Atlantic.
