A $1.3 million Uncle Mo colt led the way as the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s flagship spring sale of 2-year-olds in training hummed along through its penultimate session on Thursday.
OBS reported that 144 juveniles sold in Thursday's third of four sessions for gross receipts of $21,806,500, compared to $15,692,000 generated by 157 sold at the comparable third session of the 2024 sale.
Alongside that, the session average of $151,434 jumped 52 percent from $99,949 last year. The median spiked 40 percent, to $80,000 compared to $57,000 a year ago.
The cumulative average for the OBS spring sale should finish well ahead of the 2024 figure when the dust settles tomorrow. This sale has already, at its midway point, established a record for the most seven-figure horses sold in a single edition. The Uncle Mo colt, who is tied for the third-highest price overall at this sale, pushed the total tally to eight to meet the threshold. The previous record came when five horses reached the seven-figure threshold during the 2022 sale.
The Uncle Mo colt was purchased by bloodstock agent Ramiro Restrepo, in the name of his Marquee Bloodstock, for a partnership. He said Gustavo Delgado will train the colt, who was consigned by Eddie Woods.
"First and foremost, the colt’s work was pretty spectacular,” Restrepo said of the colt, who had breezed a furlong in 10 seconds flat during last week's under-tack preview show on the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack. “Going back there and watching the game tape several times, it was pretty evident he had arguably the best breeze in the sale. Physically, I love the medium sized Uncle Mos. He’s a very powerful colt and you also have the lean on the opinion of amazing horsemen like Eddie Woods. The things he spoke about the horse were pretty special to hear and when you have the track record of a person like that, it bends your ear a bit.”
The sale was another high point in this season for Woods, who is preparing to take down his shingle, with his final consignment at the OBS April sale. Last month, a Gun Runner colt sold for $3 million from his consignment to top the OBS March sale, a record for an OBS sale.
“I was pretty confident he would sell really well,” Woods said. “He had all the right people on him, his video was amazing, he’s by a proper stallion. He’s supposed to be a nice horse and he sold accordingly.”
The colt is out of the Venezuelan champion Cacciatora. The Point of Entry mare is from the female family of 1997 Horse of the Year Favorite Trick.
