Las Vegas Tourism Plummets in June but Casinos Remain Strong

Las Vegas is still America’s gambling capital ... but its hold on tourism is slipping.

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s (LVCVA) latest report, just under 3.1 million guests visited the glitz-and-glamor-filled city during June, an 11.3% year-over-year decrease.

Caught in the crossfire, hotel occupancy fell 6.5 percentage points, and the average daily hotel room cost was down 6.6% to $163.64.

Momentum Building for Online Casino Legalization in Massachusetts, Virginia

Only seven US states offer legal online casinos markets. That number could grow by two in the near future.

Massachusetts and Virginia seem poised to expand their gambling portfolios to include iGaming.

Massachusetts is considering a pair of bills, Senate Bill 235 and House Bill 332, both of which would legalize online casinos. However, there is still work to be done before the legislative session ends on Nov. 19.

Illinois AG Foresees State Legalizing Online Casinos

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul believes his state will legalize online casino gaming. It's just a question of when.

Raoul, who was elected in 2018 after 15 years in the state Senate, made the remarks during an appearance last week at the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States.

Raoul cannot vote on legislation from his current position, but he can help push any potential efforts.

Illinois has a pair of bills, Senate Bill 1963 and House Bill 3080, that were introduced earlier this year and would legalize online casinos.

DraftKings Will Forfeit $3 Million Over Promotion

DraftKings will return a little over $3 million to more than 7,000 Connecticut customers following a settlement.

According to an announcement last week, DraftKings settled after the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) found the company failed to clearly disclose the terms of an online casino promotion. An investigation revealed that the misleading deposit and bonus offers were available from October 2021 through January 2023.

Maine Governor Delays Online Casino Legalization

Legislation that legalizes online casinos in Maine will not become law until at least 2026 following Gov. Janet Mills’ (D) decision this week.

Mills’ office on Tuesday released a list of 60 bills on which she won’t act on until the next Legislature reconvenes in January. Included on her list was Legislative Document 1164 (LD 1164), which would make Maine the eighth state in the US with a legal online casino market.

New Jersey Raises Tax Rate on Sports Betting, iGaming, DFS

The New Jersey Legislature has approved tax rate increases on online casinos, sports betting, and daily fantasy sports.

A bill containing the updated standards passed both chambers on Monday. The Assembly voted 45-33 in favor of the bill, followed by the Senate’s 25-14 vote.

Gov. Phil Murphy (D) is expected to sign the bill into law following his support for increased gambling taxes during budget discussions.

Massachusetts Opens Online Casino Legalization Debates

Massachusetts lawmakers are discussing the merits of legalizing online casinos in the Bay State.

According to Legal Sports Report, The Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure on Monday convened to discuss online casino legislation, specifically Senate Bill 235 and House Bill 332. Each measure would legalize online games such as slot machines, roulette, craps, and table games.
