Rhode Island Will Keep 1-Sportsbook Market

Rhode Island will continue with just one sportsbook.

Senate Bill 748 intended to open the sports betting market to between two and five legal operators after a report from Spectrum Gaming Group encouraged officials to expand the market.

However, the bill did not make it out of the House Committee on Finance after it was overwhelmingly approved by the Senate in June.

Rhode Island’s deal with IGT, which powers Sportsbook Rhode Island, will expire in November 2026.

New Jersey Raises Tax Rate on Sports Betting, iGaming, DFS

The New Jersey Legislature has approved tax rate increases on online casinos, sports betting, and daily fantasy sports.

A bill containing the updated standards passed both chambers on Monday. The Assembly voted 45-33 in favor of the bill, followed by the Senate’s 25-14 vote.

Gov. Phil Murphy (D) is expected to sign the bill into law following his support for increased gambling taxes during budget discussions.

Pistons’ Beasley Under Investigation in Suspicious Betting Case

Federal authorities are investigating suspicious sports betting patterns related to prop bets involving Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Sunday.

The alleged suspicious behavior occurred during the 2023-24 NBA season, when Beasley played his only season with the Milwaukee Bucks. At least one US sportsbook reported unusual betting interest in Beasley's statistics, a source told ESPN's David Purdum.

NCAA Poised to Allow Betting on Professional Sports

A major change could be on the way to the NCAA’s sports betting guidelines for student-athletes and team personnel.

According to Legal Sports Report, the Division I Council is expected to remove the rules against sports betting on professional sports that are in place for college athletes, coaches, and team members.

The change would not alter the ban against betting on college sports.

New Jersey Bill to Ban College Player Props Heads to Senate Floor

A New Jersey Senate committee has advanced a bill that would ban prop betting on college players.

The Senate Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee approved Senate Bill 3080 last Thursday on a 5-0 vote. Introduced by Sen. Kristin Corrado (R-40) in April, the bill would remove college player prop bets from all New Jersey sportsbooks.

The next stop for the bill will be a full discussion on the Senate floor.

Prediction Platforms Skirt Sports Betting Protections, States Argue

The fight against prediction exchanges continues to rage.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, along with AGs from more than 30 states, filed an amicus brief Tuesday imploring the US Court of Appeals to side with New Jersey in its lawsuit levied by Kalshi, a prediction exchange that enjoys federal protection.
